French Aubusson Rugs
Beverly Maniago asked:
Rugs are identified by the way the patterns are woven together. These are the basic patterns that are patented by the weavers. It is what everyone will see at first glance. It can also be that the pattern's design will be named after the town it was originally made. For example, rugs labeled as Oriental rugs are clearly indicated by the intricate patterns of dragons, Chinese characters, and even Oriental symbols. Such is the case of French Aubusson Rugs.
The French Aubusson rugs take their name from a small picturesque French town 200 miles from Paris near the mountains of the Massif Central and lying on the banks of the River Creuse. It is this river where the townspeople and neighboring villages wash their wool. The weavers used to make the tapestries which made the region's reputation in the 18th century.
It was from the 13th century that rugs were able to reach the West. French knights returning from the crusades brought oriental rugs called Tapis Sarrasinois which was coined from their Saracen foes. Other Turkish rugs made their way to the West, but the rugs were a rarity and cost a lot.
Through Pierre Dupont after being commissioned by Henry IV in 1608, rugs were being sold in the Louvre. He, Mr. Dupont, claimed to have discovered how to make rugs similar to how the Persian make theirs. Henry IV was so satisfied with the rugs that he decreed the rugs of the Louvre atelier was to be reserved for the royal family before his death in 1610.
In 1627, at the age of 26, Louis XIII had the Louvre atelier transfer shop at the Savonnerie, a former soap factory. A century later, Aubusson created their version of the rugs thus the initial introduction of the French Aubusson rugs. This was also the time selling oriental rugs were forbidden when the exclusive rights of the royal family were rescinded.
Although French Aubusson rugs stopped manufacturing over 130 years ago, these were actually made by independent weavers following its specific design and style. The technique involves interlacing carpets using a thick-thread weave on large looms to create a flat tapestry with no pile and some designs were about nature.
General Controller of finances, Orry de Fulvy noticed an Aubusson has less knots than a sovennerie and it was with this observation that the Aubussons cost less. This paved the way for other nobilities and expanding upper middle classes to furnish their homes with Aubusson tapestries. These were the fist flat-woven rugs, known as Aubusson rugs that adorn their homes.
To date French Aubusson rugs are still selling like pancakes in stores the world over. The demand for similar designs led to the development of the Aubusson rug trade where for over 200 years the rugs can still be found in the very best houses in Europe. French Aubusson rugs are currently reproduced in Asia and India. The town too is still holding a number of tapestry and rug exhibitions every summer.
