Launching a Home Based Business As a Decorative Rug Maker

Russell Webb asked:

The art of rug making has evolved from the traditional woven rugs produced on carpet weaving looms. What used to be a hobby for some home-based craftsmen has transformed into a lucrative business for the modern well trained rug maker. It's now possible to create high value custom rugs from home. A good sized garage is all the space that is needed.

The concept that has made this possible is often referred to as decorative rug making. It's a multi-faceted approach utilizing advanced rug making tools that can literally fit into a duffel bag. The carpet materials are widely available in nylon and wool, yet there is no actual weaving involved. The carpet mills do this for you.

Decorative rug making utilizes a blending of techniques allowing a rug maker to complete a project 'in house' from start to finish. The process begins with a rug design on paper, then carpet styles and colors are selected. Templates are then created from the design and the rug goes into the fabrication phase.

Fabricating a rug generally begins with an inlay process, unless it's tufted wool, and the design elements are actually inlaid into the main body of the carpet. The inlaid carpet can even be sculpted and carved with a specialized high speed clipper. Usually a secondary backing is adhered to the back. Finally, the edges are bound to create a clean and polished custom rug.

So where do the rug designs come from?

The short answer is everywhere. The rug designs are simply reflections of a clients taste and style. There are countless themes, styles and influences that can make up a rug design. Some good sources for inspiration are: Google images, area rug websites, design books published by Dover Books, interior design and architectural books and magazines.

The unique markets for decorative rugs are intriguing because there are so many available. The markets range from the more broad based luxury, residential, and commercial, to smaller niche markets like pet related rugs, or custom yacht rugs.

In conclusion, the old school rug making techniques have evolved into a lucrative highly specialized business opportunity. It's no longer a time worn weaving process, it's generally an 'inlay' process featuring a few concrete steps that can be learned and practiced at home.

Rug Weaving is a Lucrative Home Business

Rebecca Froebel asked:

The colonial rugs your grandparents once made are making a big comeback as a terrific home business. The loom woven rugs are also an excellent way to participate in a recycling program.

As a business, the main investment is a floor or tabletop loom, shuttles and warp. You will also need to find the filler for the rugs. Old clothing works great and is readily available in your own closet or at resale shops. Old clothing works perfectly, and so does old blankets, drapes and other bedding. The only thing you do not want to do is mix knits with cottons. Knits will stretch and pull your rug out of shape. A knit fabric will hold its color great, but even a skilled weaver must be careful not to stretch the fabric when weaving.

Shuttles are what you wrap your strips of fabric on prior to weaving. The shuttles move between the warp to the opposite side by pushing the shuttle through by hand. Automatic shuttles are available, but as a weaver myself, you will find it much more enjoyable to move the shuttles by hand.

Warp is the string, which holds the rugs together. Warping your loom is probably the most time consuming part of weaving. Tension on each strand of warp must be as equal as possible. If it is not, there will be loose areas in your rug and the finished product will be poor. You can purchase racks and tension boxes for this process, but with some practice, you can also do it by hand.

Weaving rugs is a physical activity. It does take arm strength to pound each row of fabric between the warp. This repetitive action places jarring on your wrist, arm, shoulder and back. If you have any problems with carpal tunnel this is not your best option for a home business or hobby. Many a weaver has had to take a break from weaving to allow the wrist to heal.

As a home business, woven product is always in demand. Colonial woven rugs, place-mats, table runners, mug mats and several other woven items sell high. Your largest investment is the loom and warp. You can gain that investment back easily with the sales of your finished product. If you have determined that you are physically able to weave and like to be creative, weaving rugs will be a very lucrative home business.
